• Diagnosis and treatment of patients with hepatopathies, including porphyrias

Curriculum Vitae

Stephan Krähenbühl, born on November 29, 1953, studied Pharmacy (1972-1978) and Medicine (1979-1985) at the University of Bern, completing both studies with a doctoral degree. He received his medical training at various hospitals in Internal Medicine, Hepatology, and Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology. From 1989 to 1991, he completed a fellowship at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland/OH, USA, focusing on Clinical Pharmacology and Mitochondrial Medicine research. From 1993 to 1997, he was a senior physician in Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University Hospital Zurich, and from 1997 to 1999, he was a senior physician in Clinical Pharmacology/Hepatology and Internal Medicine at Inselspital Bern. In 2000, he was appointed Chief Physician of Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology at the University Hospital Basel, leading the department until his retirement in 2021. In this role, he was also one of the chief physicians of Internal Medicine. Since 2002, he has been the President of the Human Experts Committee (HMEC) of Swissmedic. He has published over 400 scientific articles in the fields of drug interactions and adverse effects, drug metabolism, dose adjustment in organ dysfunction, and energy metabolism.
