Preventive Examinations
Even if you have no eye complaints, preventive examinations are beneficial.
Certain eye diseases, such as glaucoma, develop slowly and without symptoms, often going unnoticed until the later stages. Early detection through preventive exams is essential to reduce the risk of damage through timely diagnosis and treatment.
For this reason, it is recommended that adults undergo a preventive eye examination once a year from age 40 onward. If there is a family history of eye diseases (e.g., high eye pressure/glaucoma, macular diseases, retinal conditions, or retinal detachment), an earlier exam may be advisable.
Basic Examinations
Using an autorefractor, the eye’s refractive power is measured to detect potential visual impairments (near- or farsightedness). Additionally, the autorefractor can indicate possible astigmatism. A subjective refractive examination measures visual acuity to find the best corrective lens or contact lens for the patient.
Various parts of the eye are examined under a microscope, including the eyelids, conjunctiva, cornea, anterior chamber, iris, and pupil. With a magnifying lens at the slit lamp, the retina, optic nerve, macula, retinal vessels, and vitreous body at the back of the eye are also evaluated. Intraocular pressure is measured using applanation tonometry; elevated eye pressure can potentially damage the optic nerve over time (leading to glaucoma).
Additional Examinations
The slit-lamp camera is used to document conditions in the anterior eye segment, while the fundus camera captures images of the retina. This exam measures retinal thickness and assesses the optic nerve, creating high-resolution cross-sectional images of the retina layers for early detection of retinal diseases or glaucoma. It can reveal deeper changes within the retina.
Visual field testing measures both the central visual field and peripheral limits, which is useful for monitoring glaucoma and diagnosing neurological conditions. The visual field is the area seen when looking straight ahead with the head held level.
