Mission Statement of the Herisau Appenzell Eye Clinic

The Herisau Appenzell Goldach Eye Clinic is committed to providing high-quality ophthalmic care to the local community. This includes modern, scientifically based ophthalmology with proven, verified, and effective treatment methods (evidence-based medicine). We ensure this through continuous internal and external education and training.

We apply these ophthalmic procedures with a focus on real benefits for our patients. Our goal is optimal—not maximal—ophthalmic care for the community, ensuring cost-effective treatment without withholding necessary and beneficial services from individual patients.

Additionally, we care deeply about our patients’ worries and concerns. We address this by dedicating sufficient time for consultation during appointments and by striving to offer prompt appointments when patients have symptoms or health concerns.

We aim to ensure patient satisfaction through accessibility, friendliness, easy access to our facilities, short waiting times, and efficient organization of exams and treatments.

In the best interest of our patients, we maintain close, uncomplicated, and cooperative relationships with healthcare partners (general practitioners, opticians, home care providers, trusted doctors, health insurers, etc.). This helps optimize processes, ensure at-home treatment, and avoid redundancies.

Our doctors are committed to minimizing the environmental impact of antibiotics as much as possible. Therefore, we strive to use antibiotics sparingly and only when necessary. These medications can be highly beneficial to individual patients when used in the right circumstances and doses. However, the practice of “preventative shielding” with antibiotics, once common, is generally unnecessary and is no longer used here.

We only offer treatments within our area of expertise and that we perform frequently enough to guarantee a high level of quality. For rare treatments that require more specialized experience (such as retinal surgery), we collaborate with larger partners like the Cantonal Hospital St. Gallen or the University Hospital Zurich to ensure the highest quality care is provided, even for rare procedures.
